- Associate Degree in Marketing: This level of degree takes approximately two years to complete. It is a good way for someone who is considering the career to “get their feet wet,” and determine if a job in marketing is truly for them. Some entry-level jobs are obtainable with an associate degree. However, it is advisable to earn at least a bachelor degree in marketing to increase the chances of employment and higher wages.
- Bachelor Degree in Marketing: This four-year degree will provide the same basics of advertising that are covered under an associate degree program, but also will delve further into each area, providing a more intense curriculum. Students can choose to focus on one aspect of marketing, such as public relations, and take core courses which improve their skills in that particular subset of the field. Completing a bachelor degree will open the doors to more job opportunities in the field, as well as higher wages.
- Master Degree in Marketing: This graduate-level degree will take an additional two to three years of schooling beyond a bachelor degree to complete. While every school varies slightly in their marketing degree programs, most focus on management skills. Those who earn a master degree can expect to find employment as marketing managers or advertising/promotions managers. These are the people who oversee an entire marketing department for a business, and can earn wages in the six-figure range.
- Doctorate Degree in Marketing: An additional two to three years beyond a master degree is required for a doctorate in this field. Doctorate degrees center on the underlying disciplines of marketing management problems as they directly relate to customer satisfaction. Students who earn a doctorate degree can go on to work in the field of marketing research, or they can teach marketing to others in a college or university setting.
The average job growth for the marketing industry is around 13 percent, according to data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Relations. Employment for marketing managers is slightly higher at 14 percent, which is just above the national average for all other occupations. Those who possess undergraduate degrees working in entry level positions can expect to earn an average annual salary of roughly $34,000. Those who possess master level or higher degrees can expect to earn between $108,000 and $115,000 annually.
